Reunion is getting closer!

Hello everyone,

Well the time for our Reunion is getting closer!

Many of you have already shared your excitement about the reunion and have expressed how much you are looking forward to seeing each other again on the night.

For some of you this may also be a 'tentative step' back in to a circle of friends from the distant past.  What ever it is that you are feeling, please know that you are very welcome and your attendance will be greatly appreciated and valued.

I feel that it is a great blessing to be a part of the organising team for this reunion, and I too am very excited and very much looking forward to coming together with you all after 30 years!!  Amazing.

At this stage we have about 40 confirmations (including some partners & relatives) and we are still searching for others!

REQUEST: On the evening of the reunion Rob Kingham will invite each of the DDYT members that were involved directly in the productions of GENESIS and BOTTOM'S to share 'A significant memory or change in your life.' This may or may not relate to your experience of DDYT.

Given that we may have over 30 people sharing, understandably, we need to be reasonably brief in what we share.

BLOG YOUR LIFE STORY!  'What you've been up to for the last 30 years' ~ We would really encourage you to write your 30 year life history (this can be as short or as long as you like), so that we can read it on the Blog!

To become a Blog Author, go to www.ddyt.blogspot.com/ and follow the instructions for becoming a blog author.  Alternatively you can simply email me (Rick) what you have written and I will forward your story to Leo for publication on our BLOG!!

Please share your story with us, we are very interested to hear from you.
Rick's email:  solar9@bigpond.com

Warm wishes to you all,
Rick & Michelle.

21 Days of easier Blogging!!

That's right folks - with only 21 more days before the reunion, the process to help you contribute to the BLOG has been made even easier! Our computer technicians have been sweating feverishly to bring you the new, improved 1 step process!!!

Just send an email!! Nothing could be simpler (except me).

The Subject line for the email will become the Titile for the BLOG entry & the body of the email will become the body of the BLOG entry. The email address to use is below. The entry will be added automatically (give it a couple of minutes before you refresh your browser to see the entry).

DDYT (dot) Genesis (dot) add2blog (at) blogger (dot) com
(remember to replace the (dot) and (at) with the keyboard character - we're trying our best to avoid 'bots' that scour the web harvesting email addresses for spamming purposes)

(ok, I confess, sweating feverishly involved 8 keystrokes & 2 mouse clicks but where's the awe in that - anyway now that the option is available I'll now be waiting feverishly for my invitation from some Nigerian official to help process a couple of million$$)

Hello everyone, it's Robert Kingham here

From Robert Kingham.

Thirty Years On

Isn't it hard to know where to start let alone try to explain how we got to where we are now. One formative experience we all share, in whatever capacity we were involved, is the DDYT.

Occupying my mind now is a monitoring and evaluation technique known as Contribution Analysis. To what extent does any action contribute to the achievement of objectives; can the influence of external factors be dismissed? For example, would the Empire Theatre be as it is now had we not kickstarted its renaissance 30 years ago? To what extent did DDYT encourage others to keep it alive as a theatre? We'll never know for sure, but we can assume that we did make a contribution, and it is a contribution to the community. While we were each of us the main beneficiaries of DDYT, we were certainly not the sole beneficiaries. Have you applied anything you learned during DDYT in the way you live life and interact with others? I certainly have. You, and your influence on me, has enabled me to support others and bring your lessons, your light, to a large number of young Indonesians attending Islamic schools. That is the core field of my work now. My sister jokingly describes me as being at the front line of Australia's war on terror. It's not really so, and I've been working with Islamic schools in Indonesia way before the gulf war. But in terms of contribution analysis, yes, there is always a contribution.

I think the main thing that's happened in the past 30 years is discovering Asia from the inside. I've been very fortunate to work on development activities in Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, China and Vietnam, as well as Indonesia - and further afield in Palestine and Tanzania.

I do not work in the formal 'performing arts' anymore, and have not since 1986, when I came to Indonesia as an Australian Volunteer placed in a rural, residential Islamic school in South Sulawesi. I live in Jakarta now, directing the Learning Assistance Program for Islamic Schools (LAPIS) which is funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). Another part of my work is providing advice to AusAID on Islamic Schooling in Indonesia. I am contracted directly to the Commonwealth Government. I love living in Jakarta, and I love my work. I feel very blessed and constantly amazed at the abundance of this thing called life.

I haven't been as lucky in love as so many of you. Committing to a traveling partner is such an awesome thing to do. While I've sometimes tried to take that step, just doesn't fit with my lifestyle. I am soooo looking forward to catching up with you all. We are so lucky to be able to revisit a part of our pasts, and bring it forward into our present - and the future who knows???

Hello everyone, it's Jo Frankland here

Hello folks,

What a good thing this is! I'm looking forward to meeting old mates again. Since Bottoms, DDYT...

Did DDIAE theatre course for a year and left the whole thing disillusioned with professional acting. Partly because of the stats that there are 10 times as many male roles than female roles, but women trying to get into acting out number men 10 to 1. And partly because I was an immature lazy student who wanted to hang out with the boyfriend and my mates rather than turn up for lectures.

Went to Adelaide in 1981 and worked the desk for a
local bands music program for volunteer radio station 5MMM.FM (now something else). Was the 'token het' in a household of lesbian punks and gay men.

Got pregnant and moved back to Toowoomba with boyfriend/husband. Stephen studied and became a kindy teacher, Sarah got herself born, and I became a stay at home mother, reading books, singing to Sarah (often against her will) and playing gendar xylophone-thing in the DD Balinese Gamelan.

Next up
got involved with Amnesty International at state & national levels, broke up with Stephen, and studied and became a registered nurse. Got given a mandolin as a birthday present 15 years ago and became obsessed with playing Irish tunes in sessions. Was in a few singing groups such as 'Jam Tarts' & 'Rowdy Girls' which were an excuse to gather with mates around a kitchen table & sing, and sometimes sing in public for nothing or free food.

I
moved to Brissie 8 years ago and moved in with Jeffrey. We have been in a few bands together and are the cheesy sort of folkie couple who play tunes and sing songs together at home in the evenings. I now pay mostly banjo. My daughter has a pathological hatred of banjos. She lives about 1km away. Just out of earshot. I am still lazy and work at the PA Hospital as little as I can get away with.

See youse next month,
Love Josephine xxx

UPDATE - Accomodation close to the reunion venue

Hello everyone,

I received an email from Rob Kingham recently and he explained that, initially, he had difficulty booking a room at QUALITY HOTEL BURKE AND WILLS TOOWOOMBA. Rob was attempting to make a booking via the internet.

Rob was able to book in at the same Hotel by going through www.wotif.com (Plenty of options for other Hotels/Motels to choose from on this site). Rob suggested that you may benefit from having this information for your consideration. Thanks Rob!

Otherwise I would suggest ringing QUALITY HOTEL BURKE AND WILLS TOOWOOMBA and making a phone booking. FREECALL 1800 633 679

Not long now!!!

Hello everyone, it's Learna Peelgrane here

Hi all the cast and crew from "Bottoms Electric Summertime Dream", this is Learna Christie (nee Peelgrane) alias "The Wall". I often tell the children I work with that "ones first role" does not have to be da da... The Lead..... One can do an excellent job as a "tree" or a "rock", and in fact Mrs. Christie's debut role on the big stage was when I was a teenageer in Toowoomba in Qld and it, was ...... a "Wall". You are right ..... they usually arent that impressed with this analogy.

Anyway everyone, you have no doubt guessed I am a Primary School Teacher and I have the best job in the world teaching only Drama everyday in Muswellbrook, Hunter Valley NSW. I have done this for the past 6 years.

After completing my high school years back at Oakey State High, along with other Oakey-ites like Mark Morwood, Mark Little, Shane Calcutt, Jacqueline Lalor and others, I left the Downs and went to the University of Queensland. I studied Japanese and Drama and completed an Arts Degree. The fork in the road came when I had to decide whether to pursue the Japanese or the Drama thing. My decision was made easier after I did my first Uni exchange to Japan as a 2nd year and there was a growing market for Japanese speakers during the heady days of the 80's, when the Qld Tourism Industry was bursting with Japanese Tourists. As I was very interested in buying lots of shoes and country road clothing and stepping out of student poverty, I decided to work in Sydney for a large inbound Japanese Tour Operator upon Graduation with an Arts Degree. I worked between Sydney and Japan for 6 years, and spent some of that time in Japan again working for the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Alas, my middle class values go the better of me and because I missed my boyfriend, I decided not to renew my contract in Japan, I came home and got married. Dull, Dull, Predictable... I know....but I noticed quite a few on the blog page have fallen for a similar fate.

Then I moved the Hunter Valley taught Japanese for 9 years at TAFE, had 2 children, and renovated an old house with my husband Alistair. I led a few trips back to Japan with my TAFE students in the 90's, but got over the whole "Japanese thing" and decided to retrain externally as a teacher through UNE Armidale. Then I studied to be a teacher worked in high schools teaching Japanese on a very part-time basis, (cause I didnt like it) and then realised I did love teaching chidlren, but not the hairy, sweaty ones. Primary students have Less hormones, more imagination. The .. choice made. Now I am really very content playing games all day with 5-12 year olds.

For the past 10 years, I have been involved with the Local Amateur Theatrical Society, the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music, and The Shire Concert Band. The 3 forces join together each year and pump out a musical to beat all musicals!!!! (stop wincing.... we all love a good musical) I have been able to re-kindle those many warm fuzzy feelings backstage with all kinds of lively people , and my whole family go along for the ride as well.. Both my children are musicians. My husband (long suffering) does the set building and we have lots of fun putting on shows in Muswellbrook. My main love is directing, and my favourites have been Jesus Christ Superstar, (Yeh... go the cheese cloth!!) The Blues Brothers, Chicago, and The Wizard of Oz. Our Amateur group also does plays and melodramas. I believe we are the only Amateur Theatre Group that allows the audience to throw popcorn at the Villian, and not have a Occupational and Safety Spec done for the event. We often move the venue round town, and build a set to suit the show we are doing, and can seat shows up to 400 people. It is one of the highlights on the social calendar here in Muswellbrook, certainly up there with the "Heavy Horse Field Day at the Muswellbrook Jail", " The Spring Cup Carnival Parade" which coincides with Melbourne Cup Day so people remember, and the RSL Back to the 50's Revue nights!!!!

Our Latest venture is lobbying for proper performing arts venue which could have tiered seating for 500 people..... and a very big bar!!! The magic atmosphere of back stage is still as addictive as it was when I was 14 and I really look forward to the get together and being with some very nice people who made a HUGE impression on me. By the Blog page everyone has got great stories to tell about their lives.

Congratulations to all the organisers and Rick Ireland especially for his persistant to this project and allowing us all to share our childhood again.

Program Guide for Bottoms Electric Summertime Dream is now available

With the cast list for Bottoms Electric Summertime Dream now available, Rick is now well advanced in contacting the cast & crew involved with the production. We are now looking for memorabilia relating to the 1978 production (ie photos, teeshirts?, stories etc). The program guide for the Bottoms Electric Summertime Dream is now available (click on the links below or on the sidebar entry under the "Check out these links" section).

ALBUM - Program Guide - "Bottoms Electric Summertime Dream"

Slideshow - Program Guide - "Bottoms Electric Summertime Dream"

The images are a Work In Progress. I have begun editing some images to remove ageing stains however time constraints will prevent me from completing this work prior to the reunion.

If you have any images relating to the Genesis (1977) or Bottoms (1978) periods and would like to share these please let us know. If you have these images scanned, you can forward these to one of the email addresses below (Rick is on a dial-up internet connection so if your attachments are going to be around 2 MB or larger, it would be best to forward them to the Genesis email address - this can accept emails with attachments up to 10 MB). If you have photos, we can scan them for you. Please contact Rick to organise a suitable way for getting the photos to us and we will return them after they have been scanned.

News from Rick: Progress has been made with contacting the 1978 DDYT members

Hi guys,

Since receiving the cast list from the Bottom's program from Leo, I've been able to track down: Jo Frankland (Acting team), Graeme Schuller (Acting team) and Larni Peelgrane!! Larni called me after her Mum spotted the article in The Chronicle. Graeme Schuller knows the contact details for Gavin O'Reilly(Acting team) so I'll get on to him soon.

Leo, we'd better scan the Bottom's program to our blog ASAP.

This reunion is now inclusive of both Genesis and Bottoms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See ya,
Rick
