Hello DDYT-ers
Kate Foy here ... when Rick contacted me about this excellent idea, I had no hesitation in saying yes. I wasn't directly involved at all, but as Murray's wife, was hanging round the edges wishing I was a bit younger and could get more involved. I recall the two productions very well, and the old DDYT was the springboard for a revival which I helped get up in 2000 of a youth theatre QUE (now sadly no more) in a partnership between QTC, the Empire Theatre (now gorgeously refurbished) and USQ. A bit like old times ...
We returned to Toowoomba from Armidale in 1987 with two kids in tow, after Murray had been artistic director at New England Theatre Co for 7 years. I've been at USQ since then, and still am. Am now Assoc Prof in the School of Creative Arts, and Deputy Dean of the Faculty. I've been behind the Shakespeare in Queen's Park Festival, entering its 5th year of operation. SiQP plays each year in March. You can read a bit about it here, if you haven't heard of it. Apart from USQ teaching, directing and administration, I serve on the board of the Empire Theatre, and am Chair Queensland Theatre Co., so life's never dull. Both kids are grown (Edward 29 and Jessica 28), and sadly without their father. Murray passed away in 1998 after a long and heroic battle with cancer. He remains vital in our hearts and the memories of many people whom he touched over the years. I know he will be there at the reunion somewhere catching up.
In the meantime, travel safely if you are coming from afar, and look forward to welcoming you to good (dry) old Woombie ... . You are going to love the Empire!
