Young People Write Own Music

Music from Lyrical talk songs to contemporary electronic music will be written in Toowoomba for "Genesis", the inaugural production of the Darling Downs Youth Theatre.

The music will be composed by young people involved in the Youth Theatre, a Queensland Theatre Company project.

They will be working with help and tuition of a new addition to the staff of the project, Mr Jim Cotter.

Mr Cotter arrived from Canberra to join the Youth Theatre with a car load of tape recorders, synthesisers and musical instruments and has since puzzled the neighbours of 4 Burns Street, the project's headquarters, with strange sounds ranging from arpeggios on the trumpet to what appear to be electronic bird calls.

As a muscian, Mr Cotter has played with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and was the co-founder and artistic director of the Canberra Music Theatre Troupe. He plays the trumpet, guitar, synthesiser and percussion instruments.

As a composer, Mr Cotter has written a wide variety of works. In 1974 he was commissioned to write a complete score for the Dance Company of New South Wales' ballet, "Fantastic Voyage", which was performed in the Sydney Opera House.

To contrast with this, he wrote the music for the most recent "Tintookies" production which has toured Australia and South-East Asia.

"Genesis" opens in Toowoomba in May.
